If you are unfamiliar with the term “indie music” you might think it’s a new music genre, but in actuality, it has been around for decades. Basically, it's music that is recorded, produced, distributed and marketed by independent musicians who are going through the same creative process musicians from yesteryear went through before they were discovered.
This topic can be a bit confusing because everyone interprets it differently. Some people believe indie music is an attitude, style or genre, but it generally doesn’t fall under a defined category, because it comprises various attitudes, styles and genres. Primarily, the term “indie” is short for “independent”, and the term “indie music” generally describes music that is recorded, produced, distributed and marketed by independent musicians who may or may not have record label backing.
Musicians generally rely upon record label advancements for recording, producing, distributing, marketing and other promotional management, however, some indie artists might choose to go it alone for various reasons. Maybe they want to see where their music will take them before they commit to a record label, or maybe they simply don’t want any restrictions placed upon their creativity. Ultimately, whether an artist signs with a record label or remains independent depends on their ambitions, goals and priorities, but whatever their reasons may be, it can be difficult for them to get their music out there without sufficient backing, and that’s where we come in! Please read our list of fun and easy ways to support them.
Simply put, it’s important if you want to continue discovering new music and attending live performances! Musicians are not immortal so they cannot produce new music or perform onstage forever. Eventually they retire or pass on to their final jam session. Yes, their music is timeless and will play on forever, but what about new music and live events? They will cease to exist if we don’t think outside the box with an open mind and that would be regrettable!
